A man from Yakima, Washington, named Julio Segura was found guilty of murder for his part in the death of a police officer in 2022. The officer, Donald Sahota, was mistakenly shot by a sheriff’s deputy.

Segura was convicted of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, robbery, possession of a stolen vehicle, and eluding police. He was acquitted of other charges, including attempted murder.

On January 29, 2022, Sahota was at home in Battle Ground when Segura, who had robbed a gas station earlier that day, crashed his car nearby. Segura ran towards Sahota’s home, and after a conversation at the door, Sahota went outside to detain him. During a struggle, Segura stabbed Sahota three times and then ran into the house.

Deputy Jonathan Feller arrived at the scene and saw Sahota running towards the house with a gun. Feller fired at Segura but accidentally hit Sahota, who later died from his injuries.

Prosecutors argued that Segura’s actions led to Sahota’s death, while the defense claimed Segura acted in self-defense. The defense also criticized law enforcement’s handling of the situation, calling for more training.

Feller was not charged, as prosecutors believed he acted in good faith during a chaotic situation. Vancouver Police Chief Jeff Mori expressed gratitude for the verdict but acknowledged the ongoing pain of Sahota’s death for his family and friends.
