Nevada has a lot of interesting things to see and do, and there is a real luxury haven inside its borders. A report from 24/7 Wall St., a website that covers financial news and analysis, says that Elko, a charming city in northeastern Nevada, has the highest median family income in the state, at $77,038.

This amount is more than $20,000 more than the state median ($55,726) and more than $25,000 more than the national median ($51,914). Not only is Elko the richest town in Nevada, it is also one of the 100 richest places in the whole United States.

What Makes Elko Unique?

There are many things that make Elko appealing, some of which are:

Rich History: Elko was founded in 1869 as a railroad hub on the Central Pacific Railroad. It quickly grew into a thriving hub of business and culture for the local area. It drew farmers, miners, ranchers, and traders like a magnet. The city also has a rich cultural history that includes Native American, Basque, and Chinese influences. Its museums, events, and food options all show this.

Thriving Economy: Elko is the heart of Nevada’s gold belt, which produces more than 80% of the state’s gold and 5% of the world’s platinum. People in the area can count on work and financial security thanks to big gold mining companies like Barrick Gold and Newmont Mining. Elko is also close to beautiful natural areas like the Ruby Mountains and Lamoille Canyon, which helps the tourism business grow.

Quality of Life: Elko has a high quality of life thanks to its low cost of living, low crime rate, high homeownership rate, and intelligent people. There is a big difference between the city’s cost of living index (87.8) and the state’s (108.5) and the national (1005). The serious crime rate in Elko is 283.4 per 100,000 people, which is less than both the state average of 493.6 and the national average of 382.9. Homeownership rates in this area are higher than those in the state (56.3%) and the country (63.8%). The number of people with a bachelor’s degree or higher in Elko is 23.9%, which is higher than the state average of 23.7% and the national average of 31.5%.

For the most out of your trip to Elko, don’t forget to check out its many sights and activities, such as

  • The California Trail Interpretive Center tells the stories of the pioneers who traveled west along the California Trail in a very clear way.
  • The Northeastern Nevada Museum has a huge collection of art, history, and wildlife from the area.
