Authorities in San Jose, California, reported that a man was injured in a shootout with police over the weekend. The man, identified as 41-year-old Ricardo Villarreal, is a convicted felon who was not allowed to have a gun.

The incident began when neighbors called 911 to report a man shooting a gun from a van behind the K&K Apartments. The man, later identified as Villarreal, had also blocked someone from entering the apartment complex’s parking lot and had shown them a gun.

When officers arrived, Villarreal started shooting at them. The officers returned fire. Villarreal then reloaded his gun and continued shooting as he ran away.

More officers arrived, and one of them shot Villarreal as he pointed his gun at them. Villarreal was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

A resident, Jorge Chavez, heard the gunshots when the officers first arrived. He described hearing more shots and seeing a van with broken windows.

Interim Chief Paul Joseph emphasized that Villarreal was not allowed to have a gun because of his criminal record. Police found a loaded, unregistered gun at the scene.

This is the third time this year that San Jose police have been involved in a shooting.
