An Oregon man, Michael Meyden, 57, was sentenced to two years in prison for spiking the smoothies of his daughter’s three friends with sedatives during a sleepover. Meyden pleaded guilty to multiple felony charges and admitted in court that he caused others to ingest a controlled substance.

The incident happened on August 25 when Meyden drugged the girls, all 12 years old, who were spending the night at his home in Lake Oswego. The girls were taken to the hospital and tested positive for benzodiazepine, a drug used for anxiety that causes sedation and sleepiness. Meyden’s daughter also tested positive for the drug, but he was not charged for drugging her.

Meyden claimed he spiked the smoothies to make the girls sleep and prevent them from sneaking out, so they could participate in family activities the next day. On the night of the sleepover, Meyden was very involved with the girls, taking them to get their nails done and picking up pizza for dinner. Before bed, he made smoothies for the girls, insisting they use specific colored straws to identify their drinks.

One girl drank two smoothies and felt dizzy and sleepy shortly after. Another girl barely drank any. Meyden’s daughter drank an unclear amount, but one girl said it seemed significant. Two girls slept on a couch in the basement, while the others slept in a bedroom there. Meyden came downstairs multiple times, trying to separate the girls and even checking their breathing.

One girl, scared and pretending to sleep, texted her parents for help. A family friend eventually picked her up, and other parents later came to get the remaining girls. Meyden was remorseful in court, apologizing tearfully. His sentence includes three years of post-prison supervision, and with good behavior, he might get five months off his sentence.
