New York State has announced additional measures to protect residents from shark attacks.

Governor Kathy Hochul recently revealed that the state will continue to use drones to monitor sharks and other marine life at New York beaches.

Monitoring for Sharks at New York Beaches

Shark-monitoring drones were first introduced last summer in response to an increase in shark sightings in the area.

“We developed new tools and strategies to monitor marine wildlife and protect the health and safety of New Yorkers. These new drones will increase the shark monitoring capacity of local governments, ensuring local beaches are safe for all beachgoers,” Hochul stated.

This week, Hochul posted a video on social media showcasing the drones that will fly over New York beaches searching for sharks.

According to Hochul, about 40 individuals are trained to use these drones, which will send real-time images of the water to lifeguards.

The Parks Department police are also receiving larger drones equipped with thermal imaging.

“State Park lifeguards, Park Police, and park staff are on high alert at our beaches to keep visitors safe,” said New York State Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseid. “We will continue using all the tools at our disposal to be on the lookout for sharks and other dangerous marine life.”
