Los Angeles is having a big celebration for the U.S. sea services this Memorial Day weekend, called the 7th LA Fleet Week.
The event will be in San Pedro at the Port of Los Angeles. You can visit some cool ships, like a big U.S. Navy aircraft carrier and a U.S. Coast Guard response cutter.
Lieutenant Joseph Osueke from the U.S. Coast Guard said that the sailors and crew on the ships are excited to meet the public. They’ll have some displays set up, and you can chat with them.
“We’re looking forward to having a good time this weekend and meeting everyone from the local community,” Osueke said.
Besides checking out the ships, there will be lots of other things to do at the celebration, like seeing military stuff, watching demonstrations, enjoying live shows, seeing planes fly by, watching a cooking competition called Galley Wars, playing dodgeball, and listening to military bands play around Los Angeles.
Fleet Week is the biggest Memorial Day event in Southern California, and everything is free.
The main place to see everything will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day next to the Battleship USS Iowa at 250 S. Harbor Blvd.
Here are the times you can visit the ships:
- Friday through Sunday: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Memorial Day (May 27): 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The ships you can see are:
- USS Carl Vinson: This big aircraft carrier is from San Diego. It’s one of the few aircraft carriers the Navy uses.
- Terrell Horne: This fast response cutter is based in San Pedro. It’s one of four cutters like it that will be stationed at the Port of Los Angeles.
