Lots of motorcycles were parked outside the Veterans National Memorial Shrine and Museum in Fort Wayne before Memorial Day. Across from the Vietnam War Memorial Wall, a ceremony honored the soldiers who didn’t come back from war in Indiana.
Bikers from Rolling Thunder Indiana Chapter One and Fort Wayne met up at Fort Wayne’s Harley Davidson. Then they all rode to the Veteran’s Shrine for an event on Sunday afternoon to make sure no veteran is forgotten this holiday weekend.
The president of Rolling Thunder, Mike Clark, said it’s important to remember and appreciate war fighters to keep the country strong.
At the event, veterans called out the names of Indiana natives who were lost in war. Each time, a veteran said they were “still missing.”
Even though it was cloudy and cool on Memorial Day, organizers laid wreaths, played Taps, and fired rifles to honor the missing soldiers. Family members could put dog tags on the wreaths for their loved ones.
Clark said it’s meaningful for families to hear their loved ones’ names and know they’re not forgotten.
Some Korean War veterans were also honored at the ceremony. Clark said it’s a serious event, but it’s important to remember what Memorial Day is all about.
One man said his brother is still missing in action.
