Two people were hurt on Sunday morning when their small plane had to make an emergency landing near Interstate 25 and the town of Larkspur.
The pilot tried to land on the interstate, but the plane hit a traffic sign in the middle, causing it to swerve off to the east and crash, as explained by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office on social media.
A photo from the scene shows the underside of the plane, which ended up on its roof in thick bushes. The landing gear is visible.
The plane, a twin-engine Tecnam P2006T, came down just east of the highway at mile marker 173.
The crash happened just before 8 a.m., and two people from the plane were taken by ambulance. Their injuries are not known.
The Colorado State Patrol’s hazardous materials unit is cleaning up fuel that leaked from the plane. About 30-40 gallons of fuel have leaked into the water, and crews are working to contain it.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration will later determine what caused the crash.
