The FDA is looking into Diamond Shruumz-brand microdosing chocolate bars after eight people got sick from eating them. The symptoms included vomiting, seizures, and problems with the nervous system.
Microdosing means taking a very small amount of a drug, like a psychedelic, regularly. Some think it can boost creativity and mental health, and it’s popular in places like Silicon Valley. Some CEOs even say they do it in the mornings.
The microdosing industry has grown a lot recently, especially with hopes of turning drugs like MDMA into approved medicines. In 2020, psychedelics companies got $163.6 million in investments, according to Pitchbook.
Even though Diamond Shruumz says its products are microdoses, they don’t actually have any psychedelics. The company sells many products, including chocolate bars in six flavors, made with natural ingredients.
Despite not containing psychedelics, people who ate Diamond Shruumz chocolate bars got very sick, with symptoms like seizures and abnormal heart rates. All eight people went to the hospital, but luckily, no one died.
The FDA is investigating the cause of these illnesses and will share more information as they find out more.
