The city of Del Mar, a fancy place by the coast, closed most of its beaches on Sunday because a shark attacked a man who was swimming with a group.

The man, who is 46 years old, was swimming with about twelve other people for their regular training session in the chilly waters north of San Diego when the shark bit him on his arm, hand, and torso around 9 a.m.

He was quickly taken to a hospital in San Diego. The city said his injuries were serious but not likely to be life-threatening.

However, the hospital couldn’t give details about his condition.
