In winter, bears sleep, but in spring, they wake up and start searching for food. In California, around 40,000 bears are out looking for food.
In a mountain resort town 90 miles from Los Angeles, called Pine Mountain Club, there have been many cases of bears breaking into homes. Security patrols are using non-lethal pellets to keep the bears away.
In just one year, there have been 600 cases of bears breaking into homes and businesses in Pine Mountain Club.
One resident, Ian Sawry, had a 400-pound bear walk into his home while he was sleeping on the couch. He scared it away with a taser and now keeps it close by. He also installed strong bungee cords outside his garage, windows, and doors to shock bears without hurting them.
Another resident, Elisa Christiansen, and her son Nico, make money by boarding up windows and doors broken by bears looking for food like trail mix and maple syrup.
The town has organized nightly patrols because bears are most active at night. The patrols use non-lethal methods to scare away bears, but the bears keep coming back.
