Firefighters rushed to Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Thursday morning after a fire broke out there. The Charlotte Fire Department said it happened around 8:10 a.m. on Josh Birmingham Parkway.
The fire started in the old air traffic control tower. Fortunately, although four construction workers were briefly trapped, they managed to get out safely without any injuries.
Pictures and videos taken at the airport show smoke coming from the tower. Firefighters quickly got the flames under control within just 10 minutes. As a precaution, a second alarm was sounded to bring in more resources.
Since the fire was in the old control tower, airport operations continued without interruption.
Later investigations revealed that the fire was accidental. It happened during demolition work in an elevator shaft. Crews believe that hot debris fell down the shaft and ignited a pile of foam insulation.
Thankfully, no one was hurt in the incident.
