A woman allegedly stabbed a 3-year-old boy to death outside a grocery store in Ohio in a random attack, according to police.
The boy, named Julian, and his mother, Margot Wood, were attacked around 3 p.m. on Monday in the parking lot of a Giant Eagle store in North Olmsted, about 15 miles from Cleveland, police said.
Julian was stabbed in the back and cheek, while his mother, 38-year-old Margot Wood, survived with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The suspect, 32-year-old Bionca Ellis, was arrested, police said.
Ellis did not know the victims, according to North Olmsted police Det. Sgt. Matt Beck, who described the incident as a “random act of violence.”
Ellis got a kitchen knife from a nearby store and then walked to the Giant Eagle, where she saw Mrs. Wood and her son and followed them to the parking lot, Beck said.
Ellis then allegedly attacked them near their car while Julian was sitting in the shopping cart, Beck said.
“As a mother, I cannot even begin to fathom this sense of loss that this family is going through,” North Olmsted Mayor Nicole Dailey Jones said at a news conference on Tuesday. “The city and I all share in your loss.”
Ellis has been charged with aggravated murder, and more charges will be filed, Beck said.
