Sleepers Look to Surface in Delta League Win Column
by Will James
Thus far, after just one week of play in the Delta League, the balance of power is taking shape as expected. After posting victories last week, Jesuit, Cosumnes Oaks, and Sheldon occupy the top of the standings along with idle Elk Grove.
Along with winless Davis, Pleasant Grove and Franklin are mired in the second division, and face each other Friday evening in a Delta League clash televised on Access Sacramento‘s Hometown Sports Game of the Week.
The live telecast begins at 7:00 pm with a 7:15 kickoff, and may be seen in Sacramento County on Comcast or Consolidated Communications Cable channel 17, and AT&T U-Verse channel 14. The game will also be streamed live from AccessSacramento.org, and on the NFHS Network.
The Franklin Wildcats (1-3) are off to a rocky start under 3rd year Head Coach Evan Boylan. While not spectacular, the Wildcats’ offense is capable. Quarterback Camdyn Greer and Running Backs Ian Peoples and Jaden Laguerre are the top play-makers.
Defense has been the Wildcats’ problem. Besides a 64-15 week-3 rout of Bear Creek, Franklin has allowed 122 points in their three losses.
The Pleasant Grove Eagles (2-2) have dropped two straight games after opening the season with back-to-back victories. Interim Head Coach Nate Miller has a productive spread offense, averaging 28 points-per-game.
Senior Quarterback Devin Hall has passed for 1076 yards and 10 TDs, with 62% passing efficiency. Hall spreads the wealth evenly among a quartet of Wide Receivers – Kasson Kimbrough, Jalen Kennedy, Milan Reilly, and Xavier Porter – and Senior Running Back Mason Corrigan; a group that has accounted for 65 receptions and 10 TDs.
Considering the strength of schedule and what lies ahead in Delta League play, if either team has set a goal to win the league title, a victory in this game is absolutely mandatory.
