Christian Brothers and Pleasant Grove — two schools whose football programs have produced non-contending teams the past few years — are exuding new optimism under fresh leadership early in the young 2019 season.
The Falcons and Eagles meet Friday evening Aug. 30 when they fly into the Sheldon/Pleasant Grove Community Stadium with major momentum after both teams registered overwhelming blow-out victories in their respective openers last week.
The live telecast from Access Sacramento‘s Hometown Sports Game of the Week begins Friday Aug. 30 at 7:00 pm and may be seen in Sacramento County on Comcast or Consolidated Communications Cable channel 17 and AT&T U-Verse channel 14.  The game will also be streamed live from and on the NFHS Network.
Christian Brothers’ first-year Head Coach John Wiley has good reason to be pleased following his coaching debut as the Falcons shellacked Burbank, 64-0; perhaps the Titans’ worst-ever defeat.
Junior Quarterback Jacob Stewart engineered the rout, cashing-in several opportunities set-up by the Christian Brothers defense.  The rampaging Falcons blocked two punts, recovered two fumbles, and swiped two interceptions to set-up 28 points.
After a rugged 0-10 season in 2018, third-year Head Coach Matt Costa has the Eagles soaring following Pleasant Grove’s season-opening 56-6 thrashing of Kennedy.  Eagles Quarterback Nathan Valencia bombed Kennedy with six TD passes and scampered for a seventh.  The victory halted a 12-game losing skid.
Explosive starts for two teams with two coaches determined to lead their teams back to winning seasons make for an interesting overview of a game whose teams combined for 120 points last week.  Both teams will find out a lot about themselves in Friday’s game.
