District 6 Councilman, Eric Guerra

On Saturday, March 16th at the George Sim Community Center, the Pathways To Understanding: A Work In Progress event took place. This was a free community event put on by and for those in Sacramento’s District 6 through the CREAtE District 6 organization.

CREAtE District 6 stands for Community Revitalization, Economic Advancement through Entertainment. The purpose of CREAtE is to bring the arts to neighborhoods and areas in Sacramento other than the Downtown Sacramento area.

As stated in that night’s program, “Arts and Music as vehicles for racial healing and self-resilience. This event is designed with a dual purpose: 1) to provide entertainment through performing arts and music; and 2) to attract an audience from our community and the greater Sacramento region to increase awareness and appreciation for our talented and culturally diverse performers in District 6.”

The night opened with Eric Guerra, District 6 Councilman, explaining what the event was about. This led into Ying Sang Man and Stephanie Francis introducing the first performer, Jadakyss Allerr with her spoken word.

What followed were the D6 Players and their string music, the Natalia Johnson Conservatory dancing Canon in D and Sugar Plum Fairy and the Unity Players.

“We are inviting you,” said Master of Ceremony, Stephanie Francis, “to join these talented performers, from our neighborhood, our district to share their stories.”

The event was well attended, with around 40 people in the audience from all around the neighborhood. Many attendees felt as though the program did what it was intended to. It used arts as a means of healing and bringing the community together through story-telling.
