In a battle of running games, the Sheldon Huskies defeated the Modesto Panthers 27-14 in the opening round of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section D-1 football playoffs on Access Sacramento’s Hometown Sports Game of the Week.

Sheldon running back Tyrell Smith ran for three touchdowns of 7, 30 and 70 yards in leading the Huskies scoring. In all, Smith carried the ball 19 times for 192 yards.

A pair of Modesto running backs gained the bulk of the Panthers yardage. Zaire Eugene carried 21 times for 114 yards and Daeveon Graves rushed 16 times for 88 yards and both of Modesto’s touchdowns.

The Sheldon Huskies, now 10-1 overall,  advance to the CIF quarter finals Nov. 9 against St. Mary’s of Stockton. The Modesto Panthers finish with a 5-6 record.
