I have been wanting to write about this awesome place called Wellspring Women’s Center. I haven’t been able to go down there for a while but today my mom randomly wanted to go so I went with her. I came on the best day because they were giving out school supplies to kids in the community, but the people who were handing out the supplies were these people from American Legion Post 61, also known as “Optimist”. They provided the backpacks and notepads for the kids. I will talk about them later in the article, I want to tell you more about Wellspring.

Wellspring Women’s Center provides meals for women and children and also help them if they need anything like referrals to other agencies and services. they also have programs like yoga classes, parenting classes, art therapy, assistance with accessing community resources, and even spanish translation services. They serve breakfast to women and children Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 11:30am. Did I mention it’s free? Well it is, if you have no where to go you can go there, they feed you and will help you with the resources you will need. I really thought this was great, today I talked to Yolanda Torrecillas  the development director. She was telling me how much she loved helping the community. She told me how hard it is for people who don’t have anything. She said children without school supplies makes it harder for both the child and the teacher, she said it affects everyone. I really liked that because it is so true.

They team up with Optimist to give stuff to the community, I talked to Fred Cummins, he is the head of Optimist. He told me they come to Wellspring to have four events every year. In April they hand out clothes for pre-school kids, in August they have the backpack event and hand out school supplies to a hundred kids. On December 7th they will have a Christmas party for eighty women and hand out gifts that relate to their needs. Also in December they have a pre-school Christmas party for fifty kids and eighty women, where the kids will also receive a gift. If you would like to know more about Optimist you can email Fred at fred2442@sbcglobal.net.
