City Year is an education-focused, nonprofit organization founded in 1988 that partners with public schools to help keep students in school and on track to graduate. In 23 communities across the United States and through two international affiliates, this innovative public-private partnership brings together teams of young AmeriCorps members who commit to a year of full-time service in schools. Corps members support students by focusing on attendance, behavior, and course performance through in-class tutoring, mentoring, and after school programs.
At the request of Mayor Kevin Johnson and in partnership with Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) and a growing coalition of local leaders, City Year is planning to open its next site in Sacramento in the fall of 2012! There is currently a Start-Up Team on the ground working to prepare for a full launch of the founding Sacramento corps. City Year Sacramento will provide Whole School Whole Child Services in some of the district’s “priority schools” as a critical component of SCUSD’s strategy to improve the lowest performing schools.
