The National Education Association is building a nation of readers through its signature program, NEA’s Read Across America. Now in its thirteenth year, this program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources.

NEA’s Read Across America Day, NEA’s national reading celebration takes place each year on or near March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens, and books, and here in Sacramento we need your help to make our Read Across America Day event a success.

The Youth & Family Resource Center (YFRC) at Clayton B. Wire Elementary School is currently seeking volunteers to spare 15 minutes out of their day on March 2 to come and read to their students. Not only will they be celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday, but they’re working hard to inspire a love of reading to their children. Community members such as yourself can be that inspiration by signing up to read to a classroom.

Clayton B. Wire Elementary School is at 5100 El Paraiso Avenue in South Sacramento. Please contact YFRC Coordinator Liz Sterba if you are interested in volunteering. You can email her at or give her a call at 916-433-5440.
