A recent study by the PEW Internet and American Life Project reveals that African Americans and Latinos are more likely to be found on Twitter than whites. In fact, the gap between African Americans and whites who use Twitter grew by eight percent within six months, revealing that 25% of African Americans and 9% of whites use Twitter.
Researchers from the Business Insider Website claim that these statistics are caused by several of the following factors:
-Twitter can easily be accessed by mobile devices, which African Americans and Latinos are more likely to use for Internet access.
-There are more African American celebrities on Twitter than white celebrities, causing Twitter to become more popular among African Americans.
-Black people make up a higher percentage of the population within the age group that use Twitter the most.
According an article on The Grio Website, Twitter offers African Americans the opportunity to get black perspectives on the world, 140 characters at a time, “making more out of less.”
