Can you hear the bells? RiverBells Sacramento are music to our ears as they come to talk about their Gala Concert! The Oak Park Farmer’s Market will be speaking about the exciting news the farmer’s market has to offer including their Walk for Health Event.
RiverBells Sacramento is a nonprofit community English handbell ensemble founded in 1998. This group consists of about 15 professional quality ringers. Their Gala Spring Concert takes place June 4th and is an event you don’t want to miss.

The Oak Park Farmer’s Market is a wonderful market operated by the nonprofit group NeighborWorks Sacramento. This market features food vendors, farm fresh products, live music, kids’ activities and more. The World Between People, My Experience As A Journalist

There are many realities to the world. People are born differently, raised differently, know things differently. My time as a Neighborhood News Correspondent has allowed me to explore those realities that were not my own. I remember my first video I did about the Summer of Service. To me, it was a program that I have grown up with and kept me out of trouble. To other students, it was an essential part of their life. Their parents have to work year round, especially those from low-income households and do not have time to spend with their children. The Summer of Service offers a home to those kids when school is out. That video was the beginning of my journey to learn more about the world and myself.

I learn that sometimes it is not just enough to put yourself in other people’s shoes. There is a more complex process to understand people and why they do what they do. Through these stories, through spending time with them, very often the entire day, I learned to know what they experience. It is when I sit down to write an article about them or make a video, that I start contemplating the deeper meaning behind their work. Whether it’s a local youth action group, legislation, or a community event, there is always a deeper story to be told, the story of South Sacramento.
To the future Neighborhood News Correspondents, I have advice for you. This internship makes you a journalist, it gives you power and opportunity under your command that many don’t have. Don’t be afraid to question anything. Do not accept the norm as it is and never accept the answer of “it has always been this way.” Be creative in your work and express all you have to yourself to demonstrate that you care about your project. It is through that process can you come to enjoy being a journalist. My biggest advice is, do not be afraid. If you are naturally shy, this program is an odyssey for you to become brave. If you are naturally brave, this program will take you to heights you never know you could go.

Oak Park Farmers Market; Promoting Healthy Lives

Every Saturda13839747_1004100713036718_1493517239_oy from May through October, the  Oak Park Farmers Market is held in historic McClatchy Park. On the most recent Saturday, many vendors gathered there  to sell their own locally produced fruits and vegetables. Some of the vendors sold something a bit different than the rest. Dave Feldpausch, owner of Dave Pops sells a dairy free ice cream which he hand makes himself.

“This business of selling dairy free ice cream started from myself being allergic to dairy,” says Feldpausch.  “It being pretty difficult to find ice cream, I decided to start making my own and begin selling them to people aren’t normally exposed to them.” Many other stands at the market which were on hand to promote a healthy lifestyle. A stand set up by students from UC Davis used a questionnaire on living a healthy lifestyle for children to come by and play with. If they won the game they could get a free fruit to eat.

Nate Turner, an employee for The Neighborworks Summer Vista Program, had his own stand where13633316_1004100526370070_1190482757_o he was serving free flavored water as well as passing out flyers on eating healthy, exercise, programs, and more.

“I’m out here to… you know, be able to let those who don’t know about the healthy choices around them, and expose them to it,” said  Turner.

Many people from Sacramento showed up to the market to either buy from the vendors and participate in the activities that promoted a healthy lifestyle. As people went around, stands were encouraging attendees to exercise for free produce in return or provided samples of their produce to convince customers to buy.

“I think t13835536_1004100899703366_1912303413_ohis is a great opportunity for many people around this area to take advantage of the amount of fresh produce that is being sold here,” said Debbie Clark, a customer of the farmer’s market.  “It’s difficult for some people in many different places in Sacramento to have access to fresh and locally grown fruits and vegetables. So having this market here is a great benefit to people in this area.”

Welcoming Back Jennifer Lee – Neighborhood News Correspondent

I’m back! I can guarantee that almost none of you guys will recall that I ever left or was ever previously employed by AccessLocal.Tv. Let me catch you up. I worked as a Neighborhood News Correspondent here over a year ago, but bittersweet as it was I had to leave the program to begin college at Loyola Marymount University as a screenwriting major.

Sure, everybody tells me it must be such a fascinating major, but guess which career field is severely lacking in jobs, Screenwriting. No one tell my parents. They still think Disney will hire me bJenny n friendsecause my second cousin was a voice actor in Zootopia. Despite the odds, I have found some interesting internships of a more journalistic nature. At my university I write for news portion the campus TV station profiling the successful athletes I see at the gym when I use the spa there.

I find the natural state of journalism, exposing raw human emotion, to be incredibly evocative, but my true allegiance will always lie in the career coffin that is comedic writing. Maybe it’s the innate self-deprecating nature of comedy writers that causes me to hyperbolize the lack of success in the field. I mean there are plenty of successful comedians, several of whom I would consider practicing idolatry for.

Or maybe I’m just someone so consumed by her dreams that she wouldn’t know left from right without them. I will see my aspirations come into fruition, or I’ll die trying. Let me add that creative people can be a roller coaster of emotions, as evidenced here, so take all of this with a grain of salt. My name is Jenny and I have dreams. Hello, nice to meet you.

Hello Accesslocal.Tv visitors! My name is Bruce Tran, and I’m one of the latest additions to the Neighborhood News Correspondent team. When I was eight years old, I came to Sacramento from Vietnam and I have lived here ever since. I’m currently a Junior at John F. Kennedy High School. I hope to bring all the skills I have learned so far in my scholastic career to the table and write as a Neighborhood News Correspondent.

As I was growing up, the English language was a difficult thing for me to learn. Luckily for me, I had people around me to keep my hopes up. The people I have met while moving around Sacramento have supported me and helped me learn to articulate myself no matter how many mistakes I made. My teachers and friends are an important part of my community because they are always around to help me.

I have lived in many different areas of Sacramento throughout my life. Those places include Sky Parkway, Meadowview, and Lemon Hill. Many people who live in these communities care about the place and the future generation that’s growing up there. While in school, many associations have helped me even after class had ended such as the Boys and Girls Club, Target Excellence, and City Years. The people who work in these groups have ignited the fire of curiosity in me as well as many others.

While I am a Neighborhood News Correspondent, I plan to write and let everyone know how great of a place Sacramento is. I want to showcase the different communities I have grown up in and explore other exciting things I have missed. Many media outlets have focused only on the wrong things that happen in these communities such as shootings or accidents while overlooking the good things that happen. This position as Neighborhood News Correspondent gives me the opportunity to get the word out about how beautiful of a place Sacramento is.

There was a point in my life when I did not know what I wanted to be. I never stopped and really thought about what impact I wanted to leave on the world. I was another lost college student, in school because I knew that that’s where society wanted me. I had a dream, but I lacked guidance where to begin.

Then I found Access Sacramento, and I now know what I was made to do. Being a Youth News Correspondent at AccessLocal.Tv has revealed my ability to speak with people from all different walks of life. When I first started the internship, I was skeptic; I did not believe I would have what it took to get the assignments done. Sure I had some basic communication and production skills, but researching and contacting were a different monster.

I had avoided digging into the roots of my community in South Sacramento, and here comes this new requirement that I had to for the first assignment. Not only did I have no idea where to start, I had no idea who I was going to interview for the video. There was no other way, I just had to suck it up and start talking to people. I figured my best starting point was to walk around the neighborhood and start with the well-known sites of Meadowview. With known sites produce numerous individuals of potential interviewees.

It worked! The people of Meadowview were so excited to here they had a chance to talk about their community I actually ended up with too many interviews and photos! With some enthusiasm in my voice and my display of genuine interest, the people responded generously. I had figured out how to get people to become an open book. Not only was I extremely good in my communication skills, I was good enough that people wanted to keep talking to me so exchanging information became a regular throughout this program.

If I could offer one piece of advice for future participants it would be to build as many contacts as possible. Not only did I have the chance to get to know the locals throughout the greater Sacramento area, but I met some extremely powerful people as well. I got to meet politicians, famous chiefs, even drank coffee with local law enforcement. Building personal and professional relationships with these people can change your life. The opportunity around me has become limitless. You also come to realization that the community members are just as powerful as the big names, because without the locals, their names wouldn’t be big.

Take advantage of every assignment in this program. Do not look at is as homework, think of it as another open door to learn, grow, and change the world as you thought you knew it. Life has no limitations, so do not put limitations on your capabilities. AccessLocal.Tv gives you the freedom to get to know your surroundings and the people that live in it. Goodluck!
