Since 1998, the Sacramento Police Department has enjoyed the benefits of a full-time Mounted Unit. The horses and the officers who serve alongside them perform a wide variety of safety and outreach functions. Going all the way back to the Gold Rush, horses have always been a large part of life in Sacramento. The Sacramento Police Mounted Association was established to help preserve this important tool within our community.
The City of Sacramento’s annual budget shortfalls have meant big cuts to nearly every department and, in some cases, even job losses. With funding being frighteningly scarce, the Sacramento Police Department has had to make some tough decisions, and the Mounted Patrol unit is in jeopardy. Luckily, the mounted unit was spared during large layoffs in 2011. In order to avoid that fate again this year, the SPMA needs your help.
On April 7th, the SPMA is holding their Horse Power Fundraiser BBQ. Plates are only $10, and participants can also enjoy a petting zoo with llamas, mini horses, goats and get their pictures taken with service horses. Along with other family activities, carriage rides will be available for a nominal fee. All proceeds from the day will go towards SPMA’s goal of raising $25,000 by July 2012.
