Gary Martin Invites Producers to SAC VIP Meeting

director-items

On Wednesday March 28 at 7:00 PM, plan on attending the monthly meeting of the Sacramento Video Professional’s – Final Cut User’s Group meeting. Cosumnes River College Professor and Access Sacramento Board of Directors Vice-Chair Gary Martin, presents”Walking and Talking: Field Techniques for a Live Shot, Documentary, or Guerrilla interview”. When you have lots of time to prepare or are working in a well established studio setting with experienced talent, the chances of getting a quality usable interview are very high. Many times though, you just can’t get those stars to align.

Gary Martin, an Emmy-award winning news producer and Apple Certified Trainer for Final Cut Pro 7 and X, will demonstrate techniques for talent and their shooters to improve interviews in the field. Should you provide interview questions in advance? What to do if you’re a one-man band, and have to do the interview AND operate the camera at the same time…. How to ask questions that connect with your intended audience…. What to do if you are on camera LIVE (to tape or podcast) and things start to go awry… these questions answered… plus more!

Ever since the first year of MOBS, we’ve shown this annual festival of socially conscious short films, and so once again, we’re bringing the all-new 2011-2012 edition of the Media That Matters Short Film Festival to Sacramento! The fest is compiled by Arts Engine in New York, which incidentally been incredibly supportive of MOBS – see the Arts Engine quote on our website.

The shorts are all made by student and independent filmmakers, and subjects covered in this year’s fest include: the continuing effects of the United States’ use of Agent Orange in Vietnam; challenges facing LGBT youth in Chicago; living with Asperger’s Syndrome; a portrait of Sikh-American activist Sonny Singh as he organizes New York City Sikh youth to combat harassment in their schools; seasonal hunger in coffee growing communities; and much, much more.

Right around Valentine’s Day, we like to show some kind of movie that might make your date a little uncomfortable with your idea of romance, so this year, we’ll be showing this silent classic! If you remove all of the violence, murder, mayhem and obsession, this IS a romantic movie. But there is the aforementioned violence, murder, mayhem and obsession… The film launched Lon Chaney as a worldwide superstar and is noted for the amazing makeup effects used by Chaney. For “Hunchback,” he wore a 70 pound hump and designed a torturous leather harness which forced his body into the hunched position he maintains throughout the film. This was also one of Forrest J. Ackerman’s favorite films! So bring a date, or just bring yourself and see this classic in a theater! Due to the length of the film, this will be starting VERY close to 7:30 PM.

With recent pending legislation in the U.S. such as SOPA  and PIPA, it’s a good time to revisit this documentary we originally showed  in 2009. The film itself was created before these bills existed but it is a good primer on issues like media control and fair use within (and outside  of) the internet, and is relevant now more than ever.  About the film-
In RiP: A Remix Manifesto, Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores  issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape  of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers.  The film’s central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder, Lawrence  Lessig, Brazil’s Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic  Cory Doctorow (co-editor of Boing Boing) are also along for the ride.  Hope to see you there! http://www.moviesonabigscreen.com
