Helping Latino Seniors Script Their Future For Better Health

Even though 45 percent of Americans have one or more chronic conditions that require medication, one in three people never fill their prescriptions and three out of four don’t take their medications as directed, costing Americans $290 billion each year and causing life-threatening health problems.

In an effort to help remove barriers to medication adherence and improve health outcomes for multicultural senior citizens, Script Your Future Sacramento and the American Heart Association is conducting Spanish-language educational presentations and free health screenings for Manitos, a Latino senior citizens’ club.

“Heart disease and stroke are our number one and number 3 killers,” said Valerie Scruggs, Health Equity Director for the American Heart Association’s Sacramento Office. “With education and medication adherence people can manage and often even prevent heart attacks and strokes.”

WHO: Script Your Future and the American Heart Association host this week’s Manitos meeting of Latino seniors.

WHAT: Presentations on the importance of taking medicine as directed, as well as preventing cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes. The event will be conducted in Spanish. Spanish-speaking spokespersons available.

WHEN/WHERE: Wednesday, May 16; 9:00am – 12:00pm;

Manitos meeting – E.M. Hart Senior Center (915 27th Street, Sacramento)

California Northstate University College of Pharmacy, Health Net Community Solutions, and Woodland Health Care will provide free medication consultations, blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes screenings, kicking off a series of Script Your Future activities scheduled for this May, which is Older Americans Month. The American Heart Association will also provide a heart-healthy cooking demonstration by Chef Arturo Vargas. The California Office of the Patient Advocate, California Poison Control System, Area 4 Agency on Aging, Community Health Navigators, Novartis, and others will be on hand with information and resources.

“Our priority is education about the importance of taking medication as directed because we know that this is the best way to manage chronic conditions and stay healthy,” said Script Your Future Sacramento Field Organizer Elaine Linn. “We are marking our first anniversary by reaching out to diverse communities and senior citizens – those most at risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and respiratory illnesses.”

The event is part of the Script Your Future nationwide campaign led by the National Consumers League and supported by more than 110 private and public partners. Sacramento is one of six cities throughout the U.S. where more than 40 local organizations are partnering to raise awareness about the importance of medication adherence. This event is sponsored by Health Net Community Solutions, PhRMA, Lilly, and Novartis.

The Script Your Future campaign was launched in 2011 by U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina M. Benjamin in Washington, D.C., and locally by former Sacramento County Public Health Officer Dr. Glennah Trochet. Information about the campaign is available at www.scriptyourfuture.org.

In rallies across state today, including one right here in Sacramento, supporters celebrated as the California Right to Know campaign filed 971,126 signatures for the state’s first-ever ballot initiative to require labeling of genetically engineered foods. The signature haul, gathered in a 10-week period, is nearly double the 555,236 signatures the campaign needs to qualify for the November ballot. If adopted into law by the voters, Californians will join citizens of over 40 countries including all of Europe, Japan and even China who have the right to know whether they are eating genetically engineered food.

You can check out what the speakers at the Sacramento rally had to say by watching the video above. For more information about the California Right To Know Act, click here.

Youth Viewpoints: Photos of my neighborhood

Mengmao

Each week, participants in La Familia’s Youth Voice program are asked to take one photo of their neighborhood in order to capture something that is important or relevant to their daily life.

I chose this location because I feel that this is one of the better parks in the neighborhood. It’s clean and when there’s light normally kids would be out playing.
B. Thao
Back in middle school, this was the spot. When there were no worries. It’s crazy. I used to think KFC chicken was the best thing out there, but its disgusting now. You really don’t see yourself aging until these moments. When you really sit and see the difference in your past. I mean, I used to walk by here everyday, now I’m driving past. Age is limited, but recognizing things like this are timeless.

Calling all Phone Books!

1JonasLynch

Ever wonder what to do with that phone book at the end of the drive?  Performance Artist Jonas Lynch has an answer that may surprise you – use them as canvas!

The unusual work of Jonas Lynch and nine local graffiti artists will be on display at The Art Building in Auburn through March 17th.  His dynamic, high-contrast style was on display last week at The Art Building as he performed during Reggae Family Night, part of the Writing on Walls show in cooperation with Auburn Hip Hop Congress.

…And if you have any extra phone books lying around, please bring them for Jonas – who knows how much longer they’ll be around.

Starting in 2005, Jonas has worked as a live-painting performance artist first performing for Al Howard & the K23 Orchestra, which led him to other design work for local concert venues and finally his signature style of high-contrast portraits utilizing recycled telephone book clippings as the background for musicians and other iconic figures. The concept of his work is that these particular figures are who they are because of the people behind them… the people in the phone book become the image of the artist.

Every time Jonas gets a chance to meet an artist that moves him, he paints two of the same portrait of that artist. He gives one to the artist as a gift, and the second is signed by the artist and put into his collection of autographed portraits which now includes such greats as: George Clinton, Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, and many more.

Writing on Walls includes works by Jonas Lynch and local graffiti artists and is on display at The Arts Building, 808 Lincoln Way, through March 17th (closed Mondays).  For additional information about gallery times and location:  http://www.placerarts.org.
