With the arrival of Week-9 of the high school football season, all contending teams hopeful of securing a post-season berth, now place extreme urgency toward notching victories that would afford them a better chance of reaching the playoffs as they come around the far turn of the regular season schedule.
This is especially true for teams fighting to hold a slight edge in their league standings over opponents trying to move past them to gain an edge with a head-to-head victory that will be a major consideration to the seeding committee when playoff berths are decided.
That’s precisely the case for Elk Grove, as the Thundering Herd attempts to notch a vital victory in a tough road challenge Friday evening at Cosumnes Oaks in a key battle with the Wolfpack on Access Sacramento’s Hometown Sports Game-of-the-Week.
This game may be seen on Comcast Cable channel 17, Consolidated Communications channel 17, and AT&T U-Verse channel 14. The game will also be streamed live on accesssacramento.org and the NFHS Network.
With just two games remaining in the regular season, Elk Grove (3-2, 4-4) sits alone in third place in the Delta League standings, trailing Sheldon and Jesuit, both at 4-0. Cosumnes Oaks is alone in fourth place (2-2, 4-4).
Because of Elk Grove’s highly uncommon schedule concluding with its final regular season game being a non-league contest vs. SFL heavy, Oak Ridge, John Heffernan’s Thundering Herd must win Friday in order to maintain its hold on third place and a likely playoff berth.
With a victory Friday evening, Derek Milgrim’s Wolfpack can displace Elk Grove and seize third place in the Delta League, thus setting the stage for Friday’s intense match-up.
For this crucial game, Elk Grove is the visiting team and must travel, while host Cosumnes Oaks lies in wait, ready to spring a Wolfpack ambush.
In this game of paramount importance for both teams, the prime- time players are on the spot. Elk Grove QB Carter Harris, RBs Tre’von Frazier, and Khalani Riddick, and ace LB Brandon Grant must deliver peak performances on the road.
For the Wolfpack, Sophomore QB, Anthony Grigsby, RB Jacob Trach, and two-way WR/DB standout Elijah King must parlay their home field advantage and solid clutch play into a victory in order to validate their playoff aspirations.
This combustible contest should indeed, be quite a sight to see; with more than enough spice to justify setting a program reminder for this event.
