“Chalk It Up!” is an event hDSC_0530eld in Sacramento on Labor day weekend from Saturday, September 3rd through Monday, September 5th. This festival was at Fremont Park and was aimed to promote art and encourage children and adults to use chalk to create designs on the sidewalk around the park. Within the sidewalk were squares where people would rent in order to (as they say) “chalk it up”. From the participants  spawned many different types chalk designs; Many were promoting a business, telling a story, showing off expression, and providing a political statement.

But chalking up the sidewalk was not the only thing to be done at this festival. Within the chalked up sidewalk, were many activities. There were many art stands that taught children and adults various types of art styles such asDSC_0534 making sugar skulls, temporary tattoos, goofy portraits, photography and more. There were also many vendors were at this festival selling their products with many food trucks parked at the festival.

“Chalk It Up!” was a success because of the many sponsors they had including Uptown Studios, Sac Anime, The Urban Hive, Verge Center for the Arts, and so much more. Aside from the vendors and chalk artists, there were many musical artists that performed. Many music artists were assigned one of each of the days. Saturday included Animals in the Attic, Sunday included Andrew Castro, and finally Monday included SayIAm.

DSC_0565“I think it’s great that Sacramento has events such as this one,” said Jesse Kuznetsov, who attended the event.  “It exposes a form of art to many people including children and as an artist like myself who has a passion for photography, I would’ve loved to have done something like this at a young age.”
