Hello reader, my name is (and take a breathe because it’s a long one) Rose Marie Dar’lene Patrice De’Silva Vega. I have lived in Sacramento nearly my whole life, except for a few months when I lived in Turlock. I grew up in a very Portuguese family and as such always been heavily involved in the Portuguese community.

I am an extremely creative person and have dabbled in many things such as knitting to paper mache. However, of all my dabblings my favorite is writing. I have always loved to write – whether it be short stories, poems, or novels, writing is a habit that I just can’t quit.

I started writing because of my love of reading. As a child, English was my worst subject in school, and I despised reading with a great passion. Then I read Lafcadio: The Lion Who Shot Back by Shel Silverstein and miraculously I felt as if I couldn’t put a book down. To This day that is one of my favorite books.

After Silverstein I went through a Kurt Vonnegut phase and I read every single Vonnegut book I could find. I was hooked and I decided then that I wanted to be an author someday.

Along with my love of reading and writing also came a love of music. When I was 4 years old, I would listen to music with my dad in his office after he came home from work. The first musical artists I began to enjoy  were Randy Newman and Tori Amos, who both produce two very different types of music. Ever since then my love for music has grown and expanded to all genres and many different generations of music. I strongly agree in the saying, “You don’t have to like all music, but you do have to appreciate it”- a phrase coined by my music appreciation teacher.

I am currently a full time student at Sacramento City College as an English major, but that soon may change to journalism. Hopefully, while being a Neighborhood News Correspondent I’ll be able to hone my writing and see if journalism is a career that I would enjoy.
