Recently an article published by the Washington Post shone light on the fact that nationwide police are searching black drivers more often, but finding more illegal stuff with white drivers. For years, police records have shown that black drivers are less likely than white drivers to turn up with guns or drugs when searched at traffic stops yet are three times more likely be searched. In Chicago alone they are over five times as likely yet 30% less likely to have illegal material on them.
For years it has been repeatedly brought to attention that blacks were typically searched more than whites. This is particularly alarming considering African Americans nationwide feel race relations are at a low compared to the last few years.
This issue is not something new to the city of Sacramento. Luckily, in the Sacramento county they have began an oversight community to keep tabs on the police and who exactly they pull over. Also the BHC continues to work with the Boys and Men of Color organization to address these issues.
