The Los Rios Community College District public relations office is reporting the passing of Bill J. Priest, who was the founding chancellor of the Los Rios District and the founding president of American River College.

He was also the first chancellor of the Dallas County Community College District in Texas.   According to an obituary in the Dallas Morning News (link below), Dr. Priest died Wednesday, December 31, of natural causes at his home in Dallas. He was 97. According to the newspaper, no services are planned.

Dr. Priest, a native of French Camp, Ca., and onetime pitcher for the Philadelphia Athletics, played a leading role in the creation of American River College in 1955, becoming its founding president, and then helped launch the Los Rios District a decade later, in 1965, becoming its founding chancellor.
