Hello people of Sacramento, I am Mengmao Thao. This isn’t my first time contributing to this website, but it is my first time as News Correspondent. Allow me to say a few things about myself so you can get to know me a little more. I am of Hmong/Laotian origin and I am 19 years old.
My most proudest achievement as of yet is being the first male in my family to go to college. I don’t attend a fancy college though, just a regular community college. We all have to start somewhere right? My father once told me that it’s not where you are now, it’s where you want to be. The only step left is to aim towards it. So needless to say, I plan on going places.
Well enough about that, let’s talk about my hobbies. I love surfing around the internet when I’m at home. I’m not really a sports man, but there are certain sports I play such as volleyball, tennis, and football. A very unique hobby of mine is going out and volunteering.
Why is it that I go out and volunteer? Well, it’s simple and quite cliché but I want to give back to the community that has already given me so much. I think I’ve told this story so many times that my friends can recite it word for word but one more time won’t do much harm. As a kid, I wasn’t the most outgoing or the coolest of kids. I was actually quite shy and had problems getting along with others. This got so bad at one point that I decided to change the course I was heading on.
One day I found out about an after school program that would eventually make me the person I am today. I’ve met great mentors that helped me out a lot towards becoming a more open person. Eventually I spoke my mind more and voiced my opinions unlike I used to. During all these times, my mentors always volunteered to help in the community. Seeing them do so, I also volunteered because they were my role models. I fell in love immediately with volunteering. Not only am I having fun, I am helping out my community and in some cases I’ve become a mentor myself.
That is why I am here where I am now, a Neighborhood News Correspondent for AccessLocal.Tv. This field of work just seemed right for me. I can help spread awareness in community events and even write articles about it. I’ve already read online blogs on things happening in my community but to have to chance to be apart of one is my second proudest achievement. This was also one of my ways I can give back to the community.
Thanks for reading, and please look forward to my future posts!
